How many holidays
Hong Kong has 15 statutory holidays in 2026 and 2027, rising to 17 by 2030. They include Lunar New Year, Ching Ming, Easter Monday, Labour Day, the Birthday of the Buddha, Tuen Ng, National Day and Christmas. The full list with dates, in your language, is on our statutory holidays page.
Holiday pay
You are paid for a statutory holiday if you have worked for your employer for at least three months before it. Holiday pay is due with your next salary.
If you are asked to work on a holiday
Your employer cannot “buy” the holiday from you. If you work, they must arrange another day off:
- an alternative holiday within 60 days before or after the statutory holiday;
- with at least 48 hours’ notice to you;
- if you both agree, you can swap to any day within 30 days of it instead.
When a holiday falls on your rest day
If a statutory holiday falls on your rest day, you get the day after as your holiday — your rest day is not lost.
Keep a note
Write down every holiday you worked and the day you got back. If there is ever a disagreement, a dated record is what the Labour Department will ask for.
