Free calculators for domestic helpers in Hong Kong, compared

Several free tools will work out a helper’s pay, leave or final settlement. They are not all built for the same person. Here is what each one does.

The Labour Department’s official calculator

The Labour Department’s statutory entitlements reference calculator covers annual leave pay, holiday pay, severance and long service payment for any employee in Hong Kong, in English and Chinese. It is the authority, but it is built for every kind of worker, and it expects you to know the 12-month average wage rule it uses.

Fair Employment Agency: the final settlement

A free calculator for the money owed when a contract ends early: outstanding wages, pay in lieu of notice, pro-rata annual leave, untaken holidays, severance or long service payment, and the return ticket. It is thorough, in English and Chinese, and written for employers and agencies. It asks for names, ID numbers and contact details.

MaidDay and duckduckday: a month’s pay

MaidDay helps employers work out a month’s pay day by day — rest days, holidays, overtime, sick leave — on the web and in an app, in English and Chinese. duckduckday’s wage calculator gives a daily rate, a part-month salary, leave payout and notice pay, in English. Both are free and aimed at employers. Whichever you use, check it applies the minimum wage for your contract date, not simply the latest one.

Kaia: from the helper’s side

Kaia’s free tools start from the helper’s question — am I being paid correctly? — and work in Tagalog, Indonesian, English and Chinese. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

  • Salary check: the minimum wage for your contract date.
  • Statutory holidays, including what happens when one falls on your rest day.
  • Annual leave by years of service.
  • Printable, bilingual receipts for wages, leave, holidays and the air ticket.

Still not sure? Ask a person

A calculator gives an estimate. For your actual situation, the Labour Department answers on 2717 1771, HELP for Domestic Workers gives helpers free advice, and Enrich runs free money-management classes.

This explains the law in plain words. It is not legal advice — confirm with the Labour Department, 2717 1771.
